We gathered all of the splashy new bottled products that launched nationwide between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 to decide which were worthy of our 2022 Eat This, Not That! Food Awards badge of approval.


The expert's take: "Bai is my pick in this category because taste-wise, this drink is up there, and I don't typically like drinks made with sugar alcohols and stevia. The fruit and vegetable juices look like they're providing color and taste instead of dyes," says Burak.


This rich and creamy drink is made with certified organic full-fat milk and is full of probiotics and prebiotics. For those who have a gluten or lactose intolerance, it's an awesome provider of calcium (390 mg) and vitamin D (3.8 mcg). You can pour this into your morning smoothie or healthy cereal, or drink it on its own for a dose of 12 gut-friendly live and active probiotic cultures.

Green tea has been hailed for its health benefits in Asian countries for centuries; only recently did Americans get the memo. While many know green tea as a healthy drink that hydrates and soothes the soul, this drink does even more good than you may know. Green tea contains a high level of polyphenols which are believed to prevent certain types of cancer like breast cancer and prostate cancer. Studies suggest it can also help reduce sharp increases in blood sugar after a meal, which can be especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. Give this warm and soothing lemon thyme green tea a try.


It seems like every time I walk into my neighborhood grocery store to grab a few things, I gravitate toward the refrigerated shelves packed with healthy beverages. Their colorful cans and bottles labeled with trendy fonts promise to deliver my daily prebiotic fix, electrolytes and endless amounts of vitamins and minerals.


Sure, yerba mate is tea, and tea can be healthy. But registered dietitian Kara Collier noted that in addition to containing caffeine, to which some might be sensitive, Guayaki yerba mate has a high-ish 120 calories a can, and contains 28 grams of added sugar, which is quite a lot.


But swapping out soda for drinks that are low in sugar, such as unsweetened iced coffee or tea, can reduce your sugar intake while adding beneficial antioxidants to your diet, notes earlier research. Low-fat or unsweetened soy milk, Kennedy adds, is also a better option, providing vitamins and nutrients, such as calcium, per the University of California in San Francisco.


If you do enjoy the occasional glass of red wine, watch your consumption. MedlinePlus recommends that women limit alcohol consumption to one drink (4 ounces of wine) per day and men to two drinks per day.


Unsweetened coconut water is a natural source of vitamins and minerals, and has the added benefit of being low in sugar (only 12 g per cup), according to estimates from the USDA. Plus, coconut water contains electrolytes (minerals that help maintain fluid balance), such as potassium, magnesium, and sodium, which are often depleted during long or strenuous exercise, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The hospital adds that coconut water also contains less sodium than sports drinks. A very small study on 10 men found that coconut water was just as effective as a sports drink for rehydrating after a 90-minute run while causing less nausea and stomach upset.


Parents should keep in mind that certain energy drinks can contain over 100 mg of caffeine per 12-ounce (354-ml) serving, making it necessary to restrict energy drinks for all children and adolescents to avoid excessive caffeination (32).


The next time you go grocery shopping, read the nutrition labels on the items in your cart to see which ones have the most added sugars. You may be surprised to see the amount of added sugars in some drinks.


Sugary drinks are the leading source of added sugars in the American diet. These sweetened liquids include regular soda, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened waters. Although each formula flirts with the upper-end of our healthy sugar content, I found each to be delicious enough to drink on the rocks or with tonic. It was refreshing to not have to do any kind of mixology to score a delicious drink.


But its unique carbonation and earthy balance of flavor (which is drawn from a limestone spring) are much more akin to a cocktail than other sparkling waters which often feel like healthy soda. For this reason, I think it makes one of the best sober substitutes.


Lyre American Malt ($35.99): Lyre's non-alcoholic bourbon has bourbon's signature vanilla and toasted nut notes but, as with all the alcohol-free whiskeys we tasted, without that zing of a real whiskey, the drinks were lackluster and tasted a bit watery. I liked it more than Ritual's whiskey but in my opinion, this is still not worth shelling out $36 for.


Don't get us wrong: As long as you have a healthy relationship with alcohol and don't have an addiction issue, drinking alcohol in moderation can be safe and appropriate, Dr. Abe Malkin, MD, board-certified family medicine and addiction medicine doctor and advisor for alcohol treatment program monument, told Insider.


There are a lot of N/A drinks nowadays. That includes non-alcoholic spirits that mimic favorites like gin, whiskey, vodka, and rum; pre-bottled zero-alcohol craft cocktails; aperitifs and digestifs that can be drunk over ice or used as a mixer in a mocktail (or cocktail); and beverages with adaptogens or botanicals that enhance your headspace in an alternative, natural way via plants and herbs.


It's worth noting that any non-alcoholic spirit may be triggering for recovering alcoholics, and drinks made with adaptogens or nootropics may not be safe if you're pregnant or breastfeeding (and it's smart to consult with a doctor before consuming).


In my quest to find tasty non-alcoholic drinks actually worth buying, I enlisted the help of a few friends with different palates to taste-test over 40 products. Though I found many of the products lacking and not worth the money (especially the non-alcoholic spirits), there were some pleasant surprises in the mix.


It's worth saying that palate is entirely personal. I love a big, bold red wine, prefer rye whiskey over bourbon, and adore a botanical gin. To better adjust for my palate, I had friends who prefer different types of drinks, as well as someone who doesn't like the taste of booze at all, taste-test the contenders for a more well-rounded final opinion.


Another helpful tactic? Drink fermented drinks, which deliver live bacteria (probiotics) to the gut. And thankfully the market is booming with them, making products like kefir, kombucha and other bacterial brews increasingly available and particularly tasty.
